Casual Game Mondays: Fluxx
June 11th, 2007 by Brian
I never, ever have anything to post about on Mondays. From now on, Monday’s post will be devoted to “Casual gaming.” Each week I’ll review a game (video, board, or otherwise) that has mass-appeal and is easy to pick up, learn, and play.
The criteria I use to determine what makes a game (not a video game though) “casual” are as follows:
- Would my Mother play it?
- Can it be learned, set up, and played in the span of a lunch break at work?
Today’s game is Fluxx by Looney Labs. Fluxx a card game. There’s no board and no dice. The rules of the game couldn’t be simpler. Each player is dealt 3 cards. Each turn they draw a new card from the pile and play a card from their hand. The cards have a variety of effects from changing the rules of the game to setting the victory conditions. For example, if the “Death and Taxes” card has been played and you happen to have the “Death” card and the “Taxes” card played in front of you then you win the game.
I wouldn’t exactly classify this game as “mindless fun” as there is some strategy involved. It’s a good game to play on a long car ride, on a lunch break or at a party as an ice-breaker (I bring my deck to every party I attend.) It’s easy enough for kids to understand too.
