PC World published a list of the 10 best tech products of all time. I found their list to be funny because it demonstrates a complete lack of consideration for anything that happened before 1977. It’s almost as if the author was born in 1985 and didn’t go to college. Maybe they should have left that “of all time” out of the title.

Here’s their list.

  1. Netscape Navigator (1994)
  2. Apple II (1977)
  3. Tivo (1999)
  4. Napster (1999)
  5. Lotus for DOS (1983)
  6. iPod (2001)
  7. Hayes Modem (1981)
  8. Motorola StarTAC (1996)
  9. Wordperfect 5.1 (1989)
  10. Tetris (1985)

Here’s my list

  1. Printing Press (and variations on the principle such as the typewriter)
  2. Radio
  3. Light Bulb
  4. Telephone
  5. Steam Engine
  6. Television
  7. Phonograph
  8. Silicon Microchip
  9. Clock
  10. Airplane

Unless, of course, I decide that Napster is more important than the Telephone. I realize that their list refers to specific products while mine refers to inventions but I could have easily researched early consumer versions of the items I named. I was simply too lazy to do so.

Also…Tetris? Give me a fucking break. Anyone who’s not a pretentious d-bag knows that pong, pac-man and even space invaders are far more significant than Tetris. Tetris is a game for people with nothing better to do at the moment.

“of all time” certainly needs to be removed from the article. To their credit, the article does say, “Note that we’re looking only at technology that has arisen since the dawn of the personal computer”.

Actually, they shouldn’t have used “since the dawn of”. It should be more like “since the popularization of the personal computer”. Then a starting point of the late 70s would be appropriate.

greatest technologies of all time is a COMPLETELY different list.
